If you’re plagued by calls from private numbers, this guide will teach you how to block private numbers on your iPhone using several different features built directly into your phone’s operating system.

The “Silence Unknown Callers” feature requires your iPhone to be running iOS 13 or a newer version.

You can use a few different approaches to stop unwanted calls from unknown or private numbers from interrupting your day, all by adjusting your iPhone’s built-in settings.

To silence unknown callers, open the Settings app, which has a gear-like icon and is found on one of your Home screens. Tap on Phone, located in the fifth group of settings below “Passwords & Accounts.” Tap the switch next to “Silence Unknown Callers” to enable it. Calls from private numbers will now go straight to voicemail but will still appear in your Recent Calls list.

Alternatively, you can use Do Not Disturb mode. Open the Settings app from your Home screen. Tap on Do Not Disturb, which is next to a crescent moon icon in the second group of menu options. Tap the switch at the top to enable Do Not Disturb. Tap on “Allow Calls From” and select your contacts from the list of choices that appears. To activate the mode, swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open the Control Center, then tap the crescent-moon icon. Calls from your contacts will ring through, while private numbers will be sent directly to your voicemail.

Another method is to block individual callers. Open the Phone app, which looks like a telephone receiver and is usually in the Dock at the bottom of your screen. Tap the Recents tab, marked by a clock icon along the bottom menu. Tap the blue info icon (i) next to the number you wish to block, which may be listed as “Private.” Scroll down and tap “Block this Caller” at the bottom of the menu. Tap the red “Block Contact” button to confirm. Warning: This will prevent the caller from contacting you via calls, messages, or FaceTime. You can repeat this for every private number you want to block.

You can manage your blocked numbers by going to Settings > Phone > Blocked Contacts. From there, you can swipe left on a number to unblock it.

Taking control of who can call your iPhone is an effective way to enhance your personal privacy and reduce daily interruptions. Blocking private and unknown numbers significantly cuts down on spam, telemarketing calls, and potential phone scams, giving you greater peace of mind.

By using these features, you ensure your phone remains a useful tool for connecting with people you know, rather than a gateway for unwanted disturbances. This allows you to focus on important calls and messages without the constant annoyance of anonymous or unsolicited callers.
