If your phone is not ringing, you might be missing important calls from friends, family, or work. There are several common reasons for your phone to go silent, from simple volume settings to more complex software issues. This guide will walk you through the most effective fixes for both iPhone and Android devices.

Follow these troubleshooting steps to diagnose why your phone is silent and restore its ability to ring for incoming calls.

Press the Volume Up button on the side of your phone to ensure the ringer volume is not muted or set too low. Since these buttons are external, they can be accidentally pressed, lowering the volume without you noticing.

If you have an iPhone, check the Ring/Silent switch on the side of your device. If you see an orange indicator, the phone is in Silent mode and you must flip the switch to enable the ringer.

On Android devices, a corrupted ringtone file can cause issues. Navigate to your sound settings and select a different built-in ringtone to see if that resolves the problem.

Disable Airplane Mode, as it sends all incoming calls directly to voicemail. On Android: Swipe down to open the Quick Settings panel and tap the Airplane Mode icon to turn it off. On iPhone: Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center and tap the Airplane Mode icon to disable it.

Turn off Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, which silences calls and notifications. On Android: Open the Quick Settings panel and tap the Do Not Disturb icon to deactivate it. On iPhone: Open Control Center and tap the crescent-moon icon to turn off Do Not Disturb.

Verify that Call Forwarding is disabled so that calls are not being redirected to another number. On Android: Go to Settings > Calls > Call forwarding and turn it off. On iPhone: Go to Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding and toggle it off.

Inspect your connected devices, as your phone may be routing call audio to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. Open your Bluetooth settings and disconnect any audio devices you are not actively using.

Check if you are silencing calls from unknown numbers. On Android: Navigate to Settings > Block numbers and disable the option to Block calls from unknown numbers. On iPhone: Go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and toggle the feature Off. While in this menu, review your blocked callers list to ensure the number isn’t there.

On iPhones, check your Auto-Answer settings, which can cause calls to connect immediately without ringing. Find this setting under Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing.

Look at your phone’s status bar to check the network signal strength. A weak or nonexistent signal can cause incoming calls to go straight to voicemail.

If you have tried everything else, a simple restart of your phone can often resolve temporary software glitches that may be causing the issue.

Outdated software can cause unexpected bugs. Check for and install any available system updates. On Android: Go to Settings > System > System update and select Download and install. On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Software Update and select Download and install.

Malicious or poorly coded apps can interfere with your phone’s normal functions. Review your list of installed applications and uninstall any that you do not recognize or trust.

Pro tip: After trying a fix, ask a friend to call you or use another phone to test if your ringer is working. This provides immediate feedback and helps you confirm which solution worked.

Ensuring your phone rings properly is more than a matter of convenience; it’s a crucial part of staying connected. Missed calls can mean missed job opportunities, urgent news from family, or important updates from service providers. A silent phone can isolate you from time-sensitive information that requires your immediate attention.

Furthermore, a reliable ringer is essential for personal safety and emergencies. In a critical situation, being reachable can make all the difference. By regularly checking your phone’s audio settings and troubleshooting any issues promptly, you maintain a reliable line of communication for both your personal and professional life.
