Disable Google Photos Backup and Sync Feature

This guide explains how to stop the syncing or backup of photos between Google Photos and your device, giving you more control over your privacy and data by preventing automatic uploads to Google’s cloud storage.

Before you start, you need the Google Photos app installed on your device and you must be logged into your Google account. To regain local control over your image files and manage your cloud storage, simply follow the steps outlined in the methods below for your device.

To disable the backup and sync feature in Google Photos, you can follow two methods. The first method involves disabling the main sync setting. To do this, open the Google Photos app on your Android or iOS device. In the top-right corner of the screen, tap your profile picture or initial to open the account menu. From the menu that appears, select the option labeled Photos settings. Tap on Backup & sync, which is usually the first option at the top of the list. Toggle the switch next to Backup & sync to the off position. The app will now stop uploading new photos and videos from your device.

For iOS users, there are additional steps to fully disconnect the service. To do this, you can simply uninstall the Google Photos app. If you prefer to keep the app but stop it from accessing your pictures, you can revoke its permissions. First, open the main Settings app on your device. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security, then select Photos. Find and tap on Google Photos from the list of applications. Select the None option to completely revoke the app’s access to your photo library. Note that the app will no longer be able to see any photos on your device.

After disabling sync, remember to manually back up your important photos to a computer or an external hard drive to prevent data loss if your device is lost or damaged. Taking control of your Google Photos sync settings is a critical step toward managing your digital privacy. With automatic backup enabled, every photo you capture is sent to Google’s servers, which might not be ideal for private or sensitive images. By disabling this feature, you guarantee that your photos stay on your device unless you explicitly decide to share or upload them elsewhere.

This action also helps you manage your resources effectively. Automatic uploads can consume significant mobile data and quickly fill up your free 15 GB of Google account storage. By stopping the sync, you conserve both your data plan and your cloud storage, leaving more space available for other important files like emails and documents.
