Former Apple Employees Launch AI-Powered App Builder

A group of former Apple employees who co-created SwiftUI have released an iPhone application called bitrig, allowing users to generate SwiftUI applications from voice or text inputs within seconds.

The application operates on a concept called “vibe coding,” a term introduced by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy in February. This development approach utilizes large language models to generate code, enabling users to focus on the desired outcome rather than technical details. Karpathy described the method as: “There’s a new kind of coding I call “vibe coding”, where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists. It’s possible because the LLMs (e.g. Cursor Composer w Sonnet) are getting too good. Also I just talk to Composer with SuperWhisper…”

The bitrig app is designed for non-developers to create simple applications for personal use and may also serve developers looking to quickly prototype or build basic utilities. It includes three pre-configured prompts to help users get started: a “Tip Calculator,” a “Metronome,” and a “Stock Chart.” Users can also submit custom requests by typing or speaking their requirements.

During app generation, the application displays its internal “chain of thought,” providing insight into its process. Once an app is created, users can tap an ellipsis button to view the generated source code, allowing for manual code adjustments. The application supports numerous Apple frameworks, including AVFoundation, ContactsUI, MapKit, PhotosUI, and WidgetKit. It also supports Apple’s foundation models for users with an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone running iOS 26.

The developers plan to expand framework support to include SensorKit, NearbyInteraction, and VisualIntelligence. The app imposes specific usage limitations, restricting all users to five messages per day and users on the free plan to a total of 30 messages per month. A “Pro” subscription is available for $19.99 per month, providing a higher monthly message allowance while retaining the five-daily-message limit.

For users who wish to share their created applications, a distribution option is available. Pro subscribers with a paid Apple Developer Account can distribute the apps they generate through Apple’s TestFlight platform. The app is primarily intended for users without a coding background who have specific app ideas, offering a method for creating simple apps without learning to program.

The bitrig app can be downloaded from the App Store, and more information is available on its website.
