Google is blocking its AI search tools from generating summaries for queries about Donald Trump’s mental acuity. The search giant’s AI Overviews feature returns a message stating that an overview is not available for certain Trump-related searches.
For the search query “does trump show signs of dementia,” Google’s AI Overviews feature returns a message that reads, “An AI Overview is not available for this search.” When the same query is entered in the platform’s dedicated AI Mode, it produces a list of 10 web links without a synthesized text summary. This behavior is consistent for other searches about Trump involving terms like Alzheimer’s and senility, which also yield only a list of links in AI Mode without an AI-generated overview.
The company’s search tools handle queries about other U.S. presidents differently. A search for “does biden show signs of dementia” does not generate an AI Overview on the main results page. However, in AI Mode, it provides a summarized response that begins, “It’s not possible to definitively state whether former President Joe Biden has dementia based solely on publicly available information.” For queries about Biden and Alzheimer’s, Google does provide an AI overview, stating there is “no clinical diagnosis or public proof that former President Joe Biden has Alzheimer’s disease.”
In contrast, searches involving former President Barack Obama produce different results. A query about Obama and dementia returns an AI Overview. One search result stated, “No public evidence or statements from medical professionals indicate that former President Barack Obama has dementia.” A similar summarized result is also provided when searching for the same topic in AI Mode. The varying responses from Google’s AI search tools for different U.S. presidents have raised questions about the company’s approach to handling sensitive or potentially politically charged topics.
