How to Put Android in Service Mode

This guide provides instructions on how to put an Android device into service, maintenance, or repair mode, highlighting the different methods for various devices, including Samsung and Google Pixel phones.

Before attempting to access these modes, it is essential to note that a device-specific code found online, a lock screen PIN or pattern, and sufficient free storage space (up to 1.5 GB for Samsung’s maintenance mode) may be required. Additionally, Samsung devices must be running One UI 5 or higher to utilize maintenance mode. Users should exercise caution when using service mode, as altering unknown settings can cause system instability, and sidelloading diagnostic apps carries a risk of malware.

There are multiple methods to access special modes on an Android phone. The first method involves using a service mode code. To do this, users need to search online for their device’s service menu code, taking note of the numeric code. They should then return to the Home screen, launch the default Phone app, enter the service code using the on-screen number pad, and tap the call button. The phone will display diagnostic information, and some devices may show buttons for specific tests. However, for Verizon Android devices, this method may not work, and users might need to sideload a diagnostic app, which carries a significant risk of malware.

The second method is specific to Samsung devices and involves using maintenance mode. To access this mode, users should navigate to Settings, select Device care, and tap on Maintenance mode. They will be prompted to create a backup if desired. After tapping the Turn on button and following the on-screen instructions, the device will enter maintenance mode. To exit this mode, users need to return to Settings > Device care > Maintenance mode, tap Exit, and then Restart. They will be required to enter their lock screen password or pattern when prompted. If needed, users can restore their data by navigating back to the Maintenance mode menu and selecting Temporary cloud backup, then tapping Restore.

The third method applies to Google Pixel devices and involves using repair mode. To enable this mode, users should open the Settings app, scroll down to System, and tap on Repair mode. They will be prompted to enter their security PIN, pattern, or password. After allowing the phone to restart, it will automatically be in repair mode. To disable repair mode, users need to go to Settings > System > Repair mode, enter their security credentials again, and let the phone restart.

It is recommended to back up important data before entering any special mode, as unexpected issues can occur during diagnostic tests or servicing. Understanding and utilizing a phone’s service mode can empower users to become their own first line of tech support, allowing them to check cellular signal strength, test hardware components, and review system information. This can help identify minor issues, potentially saving time and expense.

Moreover, using maintenance or repair mode is crucial for protecting user privacy when handing over their phone for service. These modes create a safe, separate environment that shields personal data, including photos, messages, and financial apps, from being accessed by technicians, providing essential peace of mind.
