Internal documentation from a former developer at The Initiative has revealed new details about the cancelled Perfect Dark reboot, providing insight into the studio’s initial strategy and creative direction before its cancellation in July.
The documents show that The Initiative identified a market opportunity in the secret agent genre, citing the absence of the Metal Gear Solid and James Bond 007 franchises during the game’s development. Both of those series have since announced new projects. The creative vision for the reboot was to reimagine the franchise while retaining the core DNA of the Nintendo 64 original. The HBO series Westworld was cited as an inspiration for applying fresh themes and concepts to a classic property.
According to information shared, the project was envisioned with an “eco sci-fi” aesthetic and a gameplay feature called the Adrenaline System. Newly surfaced artwork from the project showcases the “eco sci-fi” aesthetic, including an alternate design for protagonist Joanna Dark and various futuristic environments. The Adrenaline System was a resource that would have regenerated over time, allowing players to use special abilities such as healing, increasing damage output, and slowing down time for precision aiming. The effect could be extended by killing multiple enemies in quick succession.
The documentation also suggests the game may have been planned for an episodic release. As of April of this year, the studio was reportedly developing a vertical slice, a playable proof-of-concept, designated as belonging to “Season 1.” The Perfect Dark reboot was officially revealed at the previous year’s Xbox Games Showcase with in-game footage of Joanna Dark exploring a futuristic Cairo. Following the reveal, reports claimed the gameplay shown was fake. A designer on the project later responded that the footage was in-engine despite having “some fake stuff in it.” The cancellation of Perfect Dark in July also coincided with the cancellation of Rare’s project, Everwild.
