Samsung has postponed the launch of its highly anticipated Android XR headset, codenamed Project Moohan, developed in partnership with Google. The device will now debut via an online event on October 21.
The delay stems from “internal marketing strategy coordination and quality assurance,” according to reports from ET News citing industry sources. During the virtual launch, Samsung plans to unveil the headset’s features and specifications, paving the way for official sales shortly thereafter. Initial production is estimated at around 100,000 units, with the company prepared to adjust shipments based on market demand.
Project Moohan represents Samsung’s entry into the extended reality (XR) market, building on its collaboration with Google to deliver an Android-based headset. Earlier this year, Android Authority’s C. Scott Brown provided a hands-on review, describing the hardware as “premium and polished.” He highlighted its comfort during extended use, impressive visual fidelity, and intuitive controller-free navigation reminiscent of Apple’s approach. However, Brown noted that the overall software experience and the maturity of Android XR remain key factors to watch.
In related developments, Samsung’s bi-folding foldable smartphone, often referred to as the “tri-fold,” will not share the spotlight with Project Moohan. This innovative device is slated for a separate unveiling, potentially at the end of October or as late as November. The foldable aims to push boundaries with its three-panel design, expanding Samsung’s portfolio in flexible displays.
Additionally, Samsung’s XR glasses, another joint project with Google, are expected to hit the market early next year. These lightweight wearables could complement the ecosystem, offering a more accessible entry into XR technology.
As Samsung ramps up its XR ambitions, the October 21 event marks a pivotal moment for the company to showcase how Project Moohan stacks up against competitors like Meta’s Quest series and Apple’s Vision Pro. With premium hardware already earning praise, the focus will shift to software integration and real-world adoption.
