Anthropic fired back at OpenAI Wednesday, launching “Claude for Education,” a new tier aimed at higher education, directly challenging ChatGPT Edu. The plan gives students, faculty, and staff access to Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot, enhanced with specific educational capabilities.
A key feature is “Learning Mode” within Claude Projects, designed to cultivate critical thinking skills rather than just dispensing answers. When enabled, Claude probes understanding via questions, highlights core principles, and offers templates useful for research papers and study guides.
Anthropic emphasizes that Claude for Education retains its conventional chat interface, enhanced with “enterprise-grade” security and privacy protocols. University administrators could leverage Claude to assess enrollment trends and automate routine email replies, according to a press release. Students can utilize Claude for tasks like solving calculus problems with the AI’s step-by-step assistance, Anthropic suggested.
To streamline integration, Anthropic is partnering with Instructure, known for its Canvas education software. They’re also collaborating with Internet2, a nonprofit providing cloud solutions for higher education.
Anthropic has already secured “full campus agreements” with Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Champlain College. Northeastern is a design partner, collaborating with Anthropic to establish best practices for AI integration and develop AI-powered educational tools. Anthropic aims to expand its reach through student ambassador and AI “builder” programs, capitalizing on the increasing adoption of AI in academic settings.
