Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a debut RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive, has surpassed 4.4 million copies sold worldwide, a significant sales milestone revealed by the development team in a recent video interview.
The revelation came during a conversation with popular French streamer Antoine Daniel, where the team shared the updated sales figure. When asked for a sales update, senior gameplay programmer Florian Torres began, “Officially…,” only for hair and technical character artist Amandine Marest to interject with “4.4 million.” The group shared a laugh before Torres clarified, “Officially, 3.3 million, but it’s 4.4 million.” Marketing and release producer Benjamin Dimanche was also present, underscoring the team’s excitement over the unofficial tally. The official numbers remain at 3.3 million units moved within the game’s first 33 days of release.
Launched on April 24 across PC, consoles, and as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 faced stiff competition from Bethesda’s remastered RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Despite this, the turn-based RPG, blending real-time mechanics with a painterly art style inspired by Belle Époque France, has captivated players and critics alike. IGN awarded it a 9/10 score, hailing it as a “modern RPG classic” that thoughtfully borrows from beloved titles while forging its own identity.
The game’s success has been supported by Sandfall Interactive through update 1.4.0, which introduced a Battle Retry option to ease challenging encounters, alongside quality-of-life improvements, enhanced visuals, and numerous bug fixes. These enhancements aim to refine the experience for both new and returning players exploring its narrative of a doomed expedition against a god-like Paintress.
The title “Clair Obscur” isn’t merely a shorthand for Expedition 33; it’s the banner for an emerging franchise from Sandfall, hinting at future installments in this promising universe. With its strong reception and robust sales, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 positions the studio as a rising force in the RPG genre.
