Google’s Gemini iOS app has reached the top of the Top Free Apps chart on the App Store in multiple countries, marking a significant milestone for the AI chatbot. The app reached the number one position in both India and the United States.
Logan Kilpatrick, product lead for Google AI Studio and Gemini API, initially highlighted Gemini’s ascent on X (formerly Twitter). Gadgets 360 independently confirmed that the app maintained its top ranking in India and the US on Monday morning. In addition to its leading positions in India and the US, Gemini also secured the second spot in Canada and the United Kingdom.
This achievement signifies the first time Gemini has topped the App Store charts, a feat previously accomplished by ChatGPT and DeepSeek. The rise in popularity coincides with the recent introduction of several new features to Gemini, including the “Nano Banana” image editing tool. This AI-powered feature, released in late August, enables users to upload images and make inline edits, such as removing specific elements while preserving the overall character of the image.
The tool is available to all Gemini users, with paid subscribers receiving higher rate limits. Google has been actively expanding Gemini’s capabilities, with other recent updates including visual guidance in Gemini Live and a redesigned prompt bar. Furthermore, Google Translate now offers live voice translation, and a Gemini-powered language coaching tool has been introduced to aid users in learning and practising new languages.
The “Nano Banana” feature’s ability to selectively remove elements from an image, a task challenging for many AI models, may be a key factor in Gemini’s increased user engagement and its climb to the top of the App Store charts.
