Borderlands 4 has made a record-breaking debut on PC, becoming the biggest Borderlands title ever on Steam by surpassing previous titles in the series in concurrent player count within an hour of its release.
The game has attracted over 148,000 concurrent players on Steam, ranking it as the sixth most-played game on the platform. This achievement significantly eclipses its predecessors, with Borderlands 2 reaching a peak of 124,678 concurrent players 13 years ago, Borderlands 3 peaking at 93,820 players five-and-a-half years ago, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel hitting 68,238 players 10 years ago. The Game of the Year Edition of Borderlands had a much lower peak of 23,655 players.
The successful launch of Borderlands 4 has been met with positive reviews, with IGN publishing a review of the game. IGN has also provided players with an updated hourly SHiFT codes list and expert recommendations on character selection to enhance their gaming experience.
In a recent interview with IGN, the game’s narrative director Sam Winkler, lead writer Taylor Clark, and managing director of narrative properties Lin Joyce discussed the team’s decision to craft a more grounded story for Borderlands 4, offering insight into the creative process behind the game.
