Sonic and Shadow are reportedly joining the Fortnite universe, but not necessarily as playable skins. Fortnite leaker Wenso has shared datamined evidence of in-game “Kicks” themed around the two Sega hedgehogs.
The designs of these Kicks closely resemble Puma’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog collection, set to release on October 30th, hinting at a potential collaboration between Sega and Puma. Although the Fortnite shop already features Kicks from various brands like Nike, Adidas, Vans, and Puma, Wenso noted that no shop assets for the Sonic and Shadow Kicks have appeared in the game yet. Interestingly, Puma’s collection also includes sneakers themed on Tails, Sonic’s sidekick, though these haven’t been found in the game data.
The likelihood of full Sonic and Shadow skins being available is considered low, partly due to Sonic’s canon proportions. Leakers also point out that Sonic traditionally doesn’t use weapons, which could be another reason for their potential exclusion as playable characters. It’s hypothesized that Sega might follow Nintendo’s lead in avoiding having its characters engage in gunplay within Fortnite. Instead, Sega may opt for releasing additional clothing items alongside the Kicks.
This potential Fortnite crossover might coincide with the release of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds later this month. The racing game is based on crossovers with other franchises, hinting at a reciprocal relationship between the two franchises. The exact form of the collaboration remains unconfirmed, pending further announcements by either Epic Games or Sega.
