Treyarch has announced that certain Black Ops 6 skins will be transferable to Black Ops 7, following community discussions regarding Activision’s decision to restrict cosmetic carry-over to the upcoming game.
The Call of Duty series has increasingly incorporated “goofy skins,” sparking debate among players. Recent additions, such as Beavis and Butt-Head, American Dad, and weed-themed bundles featuring Seth Rogen, have led some fans to criticize what they see as the “Fortnite-ification” of Call of Duty. These players have urged Activision to return to its military simulation (mil-sim) roots.
Last month, Activision surprised the Call of Duty community by announcing that Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapons from Black Ops 6 would not carry forward into Black Ops 7. This decision was unexpected, as players typically anticipate that purchased content will transfer to subsequent entries, especially given that Black Ops 7 directly follows Black Ops 6.
Activision explained that Black Ops 7 “needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting.” The publisher stated, “That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7.” However, they clarified that “Double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still carry forward, because we recognize your time and progression are important.”
Activision also clarified that this change applies only to Black Ops 7, and Call of Duty: Warzone remains unaffected, allowing continued use of Black Ops 6 content there. The initial impact of this decision is that “goofy skins” will not be prevalent in Multiplayer mode at launch. Activision indicated that Black Ops 7 bundles and items “will be crafted to fit the Black Ops identity.” They added, “We hear the feedback. We need to deliver a better balance toward the immersive, core Call of Duty experience.”
The initial reaction to the announcement was mixed, featuring shock at the cancellation of carry-forward for Black Ops 7, excitement about a return to Call of Duty’s roots, and frustration over the loss of time and money invested in cosmetic items earned in recent months.
Treyarch has now confirmed that certain skins, primarily those related to the Zombies mode in Black Ops 6, will indeed carry forward. In a social media post, Treyarch stated that the four main quest Operator Skin rewards earned in Black Ops 6 will be available in Black Ops 7 at launch. Additionally, the New Orders Prestige Level 1000 Operator Skin reward will be available for Samuels on day one.
