Google Home Web App Gains Smart Device Control

Google is expanding the capabilities of the Google Home web app, allowing users to control a wider range of smart devices directly from their browsers. This move follows Google’s announcement in June about bringing more device control to the web app.

The expansion is currently available through the Google Home Public Preview program. According to a report by 9to5Google, the preview now includes a “Devices” tab alongside the existing “Cameras” and “Automations” tabs. This new tab organizes devices by room, mirroring the structure within the Google Home mobile app.

Within each room, users can now interact with their smart devices. A single tap toggles devices on or off, similar to the mobile app experience. For smart lights, users can adjust brightness by dragging a button, although a color picker is not yet available. Nest Thermostats feature plus and minus buttons for temperature adjustments, with additional options accessible through an overflow menu.

The preview also extends control to smart locks, smart plugs, and cameras. However, media devices such as speakers, displays, and Chromecasts are not yet controllable within the grid, despite being visible. The initial announcement in June included an image showcasing controls for lights, thermostats, and various indoor and outdoor cameras.

Google has indicated that further enhancements are planned for the web app. The preview program’s notes mention that more device types and controls will be added in the future. This suggests that Google aims to eventually provide comprehensive control over smart home devices through the web app.

The addition of new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam devices in the Google Home app and retail stores further emphasizes Google’s ongoing investment in expanding its smart home ecosystem and functionality. The company’s continued hinting at future updates suggests a commitment to enhancing the web app’s capabilities and providing users with more comprehensive control over their smart homes from any device.
