Samsung is reportedly developing a new foldable device called “Wide Fold,” expected to launch in the second half of 2026, as per ET News. This new device is speculated to be a response to Apple’s rumored iPhone Fold.

The “Wide Fold” is anticipated to have a unique screen ratio, being shorter vertically when folded but longer horizontally. According to ET News, the goal is to create a “wide-type” Fold by combining two 18:9 screens, resulting in an internal display with a nearly identical 18:18 aspect ratio. The specifications for this device are expected to be finalized by the end of the month or early October.

A fan rendition of Samsung’s “Wide Fold” device was shared by tipster Ice Universe, providing insight into the potential design. The unofficial image suggests a more compact cover display. This design approach is similar to that of other manufacturers, such as Google with its Pixel Fold and OPPO with its Find N and Find N2, which received positive feedback for their compact form factors and landscape-oriented folding screens.

However, these devices faced criticism due to a lack of apps optimized for the wide aspect ratio. The rumored iPhone Fold is also expected to feature a squat design, contrasting with the taller, narrower design of Samsung’s Z Fold models. The success of the “Wide Fold” will likely depend on how well Samsung and third-party developers address the app optimization challenges associated with wider aspect ratios.

Samsung’s exploration of the “Wide Fold” device signals a potential shift in foldable design philosophy, prioritizing a more compact and landscape-oriented experience. This move is potentially aimed at directly competing with the anticipated features of Apple’s entry into the foldable market. The final specifications and app ecosystem support will be crucial factors in determining the device’s appeal and overall success.
