Apple AirTag 2 Rumored for September Launch Event

Apple is set to host its highly anticipated “Awe dropping” September event on Tuesday, September 9th, with speculation ramping up about potential product announcements, including a possible AirTag 2.

The original AirTag, released in April 2021 during Apple’s “Spring Loaded” event, is nearly five years old, and the next-generation model is expected to address some of its limitations with several key upgrades. These upgrades include a newer Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip for enhanced connectivity and an extended range for Precision Finding. Apple also plans to incorporate privacy enhancements to mitigate stalking concerns that arose from users disabling the speaker on the original AirTag.

One of the most significant improvements in the AirTag 2 is the range of its Precision Finding feature, which is expected to triple thanks to the new UWB chip. The current AirTag has a Precision Finding range of 10-30 meters, and the AirTag 2 could extend this range to 30-90 meters, allowing users to locate their tagged items from a much greater distance.

The design of the AirTag 2 is expected to remain consistent with the original, ensuring compatibility with existing AirTag accessories. This means that users who upgrade to the new model won’t need to replace their keychains, cases, or other accessories.

While the AirTag 2 announcement is not guaranteed for the upcoming September event, it remains a strong possibility. Reports indicate that the product has been “nearly ready” for some time, giving Apple the flexibility to announce it whenever they deem appropriate. Given the AirTag’s reliance on the iPhone ecosystem, launching it alongside the new iPhone models at the September event seems logical. However, an announcement later in the year is also possible, with some rumors pointing towards a 2025 launch for the AirTag 2.

In the meantime, deals are available for the current AirTag. A four-pack of AirTags is currently discounted by 20%, bringing the price down to $80, or $20 per AirTag. This is a significant discount from the typical price of $29 per AirTag.

For current AirTag owners, there is also a waterproof 10-year battery case available for $40 per four-pack, which could expand the AirTag’s utility in various scenarios.

The potential launch of the AirTag 2 and its upgraded features has generated considerable interest, particularly regarding the improvements to range and privacy. Whether it will debut at the September event or later, the AirTag 2 is shaping up to be a notable upgrade to Apple’s tracking device.
