Google Photos has introduced AI-powered editing tools that allow users to remove fences and other unwanted objects from images, fulfilling a promise made in 2017. The two main tools are Help Me Edit and Gemini Nano Banana.
Help Me Edit provides precise, high-resolution edits and is built directly into Google Photos. Users open a photo, tap Edit, and select Help Me Edit, then type a prompt describing the desired change. The AI processes the image and returns results within seconds. Tests have shown it can remove fences from photos of various subjects with minimal artifacts or shadows, even in complex backgrounds. The tool can also clean scratches and reflections from glass, producing clear images without distorting the original. Currently, Help Me Edit is available exclusively on Pixel 10 devices in the US.
Gemini Nano Banana offers a creative alternative for users without access to Pixel-exclusive features. It is available through the Gemini app in multiple countries. Users upload an image and describe the desired edit, and the AI removes fences or other unwanted objects. Unlike Help Me Edit, Nano Banana is more experimental: it may crop parts of the image, adjust backgrounds, or alter subjects, producing creative but less precise results. The tool also limits the output resolution to 1184 × 864, and complex edits may require repeated prompts.
To achieve the best outcome, users should use Help Me Edit when high-resolution and precise edits are needed. Nano Banana can serve as a flexible alternative, but users should carefully review edits for unintended changes and refine prompts when dealing with complex elements. Experimenting with both tools helps preserve the original detail and composition while removing distractions.
Google’s AI editing tools enhance photography by improving composition, focusing attention on the subject, and enhancing image quality. By simplifying object removal, the tools make it easier to create visually appealing and story-driven photos. They also democratize advanced photo editing, allowing both amateurs and professionals to produce polished images without extensive technical skills.
These features represent a step toward more intuitive and sophisticated AI-powered editing. Users can expect increasingly precise object removal, enhanced image restoration, and greater integration of AI in photography workflows. As AI technology continues to advance, these tools will enable new creative possibilities, making photo editing faster, more accurate, and more accessible.
