OpenAI has announced significant executive role changes and the acquisition of product analytics firm Statsig for $1.1 billion, following Fidji Simo’s appointment as CEO of Applications on August 18th.
Statsig, specializing in A/B testing and product improvement tools, will see its founder and CEO, Vijaye Raji, become OpenAI’s CTO of Applications. Raji will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, reporting to Simo. OpenAI stated in a blog post that Raji’s responsibilities will span core systems and product lines including infrastructure and Integrity.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval, with Statsig employees becoming OpenAI employees upon finalization. OpenAI has confirmed that Statsig will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office, serving its existing customer base. The company stated, “We’ll take a measured approach to any future integration, ensuring continuity for current customers and enabling the team to stay focused on what they do best.”
In addition to the acquisition, Srinivas Narayanan, previously responsible for engineering and the development of ChatGPT and developer APIs, has been promoted to CTO of B2B Applications. Narayanan will manage business-side applications for startups, enterprises, and government, reporting to COO Brad Lightcap.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, is transitioning to the research side as VP of AI for Science, forming a new team under Chief Research Officer Mark Chen. Consequently, Weil’s former product team, including ChatGPT head Nick Turley, will now report directly to Fidji Simo.
