Google Adds Automatic Backup for Android Theft Protection

Google Adds Automatic Backup for Android Theft Protection

Google has introduced a feature to automatically back up and restore Android Theft Protection settings, enhancing device security management for Android users.

The update is centered around Android’s Theft Protection suite, which encompasses features such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. These features are designed to safeguard devices in the event they are lost or stolen.

Prior to this update, users were required to manually re-enable these protections following a factory reset or when transitioning to a new phone. This process was not only cumbersome but also easily overlooked, potentially leaving devices vulnerable to unauthorized access.

The latest Play Services update now includes Theft Protection settings in the device’s cloud backup. Consequently, when a backup is restored on either a new device or the current one, the user’s Theft Protection preferences are automatically reinstated. This development eliminates the necessity for manual configuration, thereby streamlining the process.

It is worth noting that if Theft Protection features were disabled before the backup, they will remain disabled upon restoration. This ensures that the user’s prior settings are preserved.

Google’s cloud backup already saves various data, including app data and Wi-Fi networks, among other settings. The inclusion of Theft Protection settings in this list further enhances the overall user experience and bolsters device security.

The backup and restore feature for Theft Protection is being rolled out as part of the September Play Services v25.34 update.

The availability of this update may vary, and it is likely to take some time before it is disseminated to all Android devices.
