Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 version 25H2 has entered the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel, signaling its imminent public release, although it won’t introduce new features beyond version 24H2.
The key aspects of this release include its entry into the Release Preview Channel, sharing feature parity with version 24H2, removal of PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC, faster upgrades from 24H2, and anticipation of general availability in late September or early October.
According to a Microsoft blog post, “Windows 11, version 24H2 and version 25H2 use a shared servicing branch. This means that they also share the same new features and enhancements delivered through our continuous innovation efforts.” This clarifies that version 25H2 won’t include exclusive features not present in version 24H2.
Version 25H2 removes certain features, specifically PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC) tool. Microsoft anticipates minimal impact from these removals on most users.
The shared platform and servicing stack between Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 result in a faster upgrade experience for users transitioning from 24H2, requiring only a single restart that takes a few minutes. This is due to 25H2 being delivered as an enablement package rather than a complete OS upgrade.
Microsoft expects no compatibility issues between versions 24H2 and 25H2, ensuring applications and games function correctly post-upgrade. The company prioritized a smooth update process despite the absence of new features.
Given its Release Preview Channel status, version 25H2 is expected to achieve general availability between late September and early October. As it offers no new features, users aren’t compelled to immediately install it, since version 24H2 will continue receiving updates and support until October 2026.
Users can join the Windows Insider Release Preview Channel to install version 25H2 before its general release via the “seeker” experience in Windows Update by going to Settings and Windows Update.
When version 25H2 becomes generally available, it won’t be automatically downloaded and installed for users on version 24H2. Instead, it will appear as an optional update in Windows Update until support for version 24H2 ends, at which point it will be automatically installed to maintain the PC’s security and support status.
Microsoft’s approach to version 25H2 aligns with its standard practice for Windows 11 feature updates, remaining optional until the current version reaches its end of support, ensuring continued security.
