ChatGPT has introduced a new flashcard-based quiz feature to help users learn and evaluate their knowledge on various topics as part of its “Study and Learn” mode.
The feature was tested using the prompt: “Turn financial econometrics into a clean GPT flashcard quiz,” and the GPT-5-Thinking model was selected to generate complex questions related to applying statistical methods to financial market data. Although the GPT-5-Thinking model was used for this test, the flashcard feature is not limited to this specific model.
Upon receiving the prompt, GPT-5 analyzed the question and generated a flashcard directly within the conversation. Users can select an answer, and ChatGPT will present the next question. At the end of the quiz, a scorecard is provided to summarize the user’s performance.
After completing the quiz, users can ask follow-up questions, delve deeper into the subject matter, and take another quiz. GPT-5 retains memory of the user’s progress to refine and improve subsequent quizzes, allowing for a more personalized learning experience.
The effectiveness of quizzes as a learning tool is supported by a study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which found that quizzes enable students to “evaluate their actual, rather than their perceived, depth of knowledge.” GPT-5’s Study and Learn mode, incorporating flashcard quizzes, aims to leverage this principle to enhance the learning experience.
The new flashcard quiz feature is designed to enable users to assess their understanding of a topic, reinforcing learning through active recall and evaluation, thereby providing a comprehensive learning experience.
