LG Display is lobbying Apple to adopt Tandem OLED display technology, currently used in the latest iPad Pro models, for future iPhones, with industry reports suggesting consideration for iPhone release in 2028.
The Tandem OLED technology, heavily invested in by LG Display, enhances brightness and extends lifespan compared to conventional OLED displays. This is achieved by stacking two layers of red, green, and blue emitting layers, allowing pixels to operate at lower brightness levels while maintaining the same luminance output. As a result, this configuration improves power efficiency and increases durability.
As a primary supplier of OLED panels for Apple, LG Display believes Tandem OLED technology would significantly benefit iPhones by providing brighter and more durable displays. However, Apple is known for its cautious approach to adopting new display technologies, conducting thorough testing and validation before large-scale implementation.
Rumors suggest Apple is exploring Tandem OLEDs for its 2028 iPhones, but adoption is not guaranteed. Apple prioritizes factors such as battery life, cost, and overall user experience when making decisions about new technologies. The success of LG Display’s efforts to persuade Apple to integrate Tandem OLED technology into future iPhone models remains uncertain.
