Kirby Air Riders is back, racing to take over Switch 2

Nintendo unveiled Kirby Air Riders for the Switch 2 during its recent Direct, joining Mario Kart World in the racing lineup. This sequel to the 2003 GameCube favorite is slated for release before the year’s end, though it won’t be a launch title.

The reveal trailer offered a glimpse of Kirby racing on a star against opponents, though gameplay footage wasn’t shown. Masahiro Sakurai, director of the original Kirby Air Ride and the Super Smash Bros. series since Brawl, is returning to direct the sequel.

The original game’s unique appeal stemmed from its streamlined controls. Players only managed direction and used the A button for braking, boosting, and enemy capture, eliminating the need to accelerate. City Trial mode was a highlight, challenging players to navigate a large map, gather upgrades amidst obstacles and random events, and compete in a final battle after a time limit. The anticipation is that Kirby Air Riders will maintain the original’s simplicity and novelty when it releases on Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.
