Meta has announced a new partnership with Midjourney to enhance its AI tools, particularly in image and video generation, as part of its broader AI superintelligence project focused on developing artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The collaboration aims to integrate Midjourney’s expertise in visual generation into Meta’s AI models and products, benefiting advertisers, marketers, and general users of its generative AI features. Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, highlighted the partnership as a strategic move to “team up with the best companies in the industry” to enhance Meta’s AI capabilities. Wang stated, “We’re proud to announce a partnership with Midjourney, to license their aesthetic technology for our future models and products, bringing beauty to billions. This technical collaboration between our research teams is part of our effort to team up with the best companies in the industry whose work and expertise complements our own.”

Midjourney is recognized as an industry leader in AI-driven visual generation, with advancements in video generation. The collaboration is expected to significantly upgrade Meta’s AI generation tools, enabling the creation of better-looking ads and enhancing the overall user experience. Meta reports that “almost 2 million advertisers are now using its updated video generation features” with small and medium-sized businesses showing strong adoption of image animation.

Meta’s decision to partner with Midjourney is notable, considering the company’s existing visual AI models and ongoing development of its own “Movie Gen” AI tool, which aims to enable users to create short films from text prompts. Meta is working with Hollywood filmmakers on “Movie Gen”.

Wang emphasized Meta’s commitment to staying at the forefront of AI by collaborating with leading companies like Midjourney. “To ensure Meta is able to deliver the best possible products for people it will require taking an all-of-the-above approach. This means world-class talent, ambitious compute roadmap, and working with the best players across the industry,” Wang said about Meta’s commitment to AI evolution.

This partnership signifies Meta’s dedication to leveraging external expertise to improve its AI offerings and maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The integration of Midjourney’s technology is expected to pave the way for improved visual generations within Meta’s apps and services.
