This guide will show you how to enable and manage LED flash notifications on your iPhone, ensuring you never miss an important alert. You will learn how to make your iPhone flash when you receive a text message.

Before you start, your iPhone must be running a recent version of iOS. Ensure you have access to your iPhone’s Settings app. To set up LED flash notifications for messages on your iPhone, follow the steps outlined below.

First, you need to enable notifications for Messages. Open your iPhone’s Settings app, which is the gray app with gears on your home screen. Tap Notifications, which you might need to scroll down to find. Then, scroll down and tap Messages, as apps are listed alphabetically. Slide the button next to “Allow Notifications” to the On position, and it will turn green. Tap the radio button under Lock Screen in the alerts section to allow notifications when your phone is locked. You can also adjust other settings like banner style or notification sounds.

Next, you need to enable LED flashes for notifications. Open your iPhone’s Settings app again and tap Accessibility. On older iOS versions, this might be under the General section. Tap Audio & Visual, which you can find by scrolling down under the HEARING header. Then, tap LED Flash for Alerts, usually at the bottom of the menu. Toggle on the switch next to LED Flash for Alerts, and the LED light on the back of your iPhone will now flash for any notification, including Messages. Note that this setting applies to all app notifications, not just Messages. To stop flashes from a specific app, you must turn off its notifications.

You can also enable LED flash when your phone is unlocked or in Silent mode optionally. If you want to see a flash when your phone is unlocked, toggle on Flash While Unlocked. You can also toggle Flash in Silent Mode on or off based on your preference. For the best visibility of the LED flash, place your iPhone screen-down.

Enabling LED flash for alerts can significantly improve your notification experience, especially if you often miss audible alerts. This visual cue ensures you are immediately aware of incoming messages and other notifications, even in noisy environments or when your phone is on silent. It’s a particularly useful accessibility feature for those with hearing impairments, providing a clear and unmistakable signal.

Beyond accessibility, the LED flash can also help you quickly locate your phone in dimly lit settings, thanks to the bright, attention-grabbing flash. By customizing when the flash appears—whether unlocked, locked, or in silent mode—you can tailor the feature to fit your personal habits and ensure you stay connected without disruption.
