Apple is developing a new Mac Pro featuring the unreleased M4 Ultra chip, according to a Macworld report citing internal Apple code, which identifies the chip as “t8152” and codenamed “Hidra.”
The new chip’s development is reportedly the reason for the Mac Pro’s delayed release. Earlier this year, Apple was expected to launch updates for both the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. While the Mac Studio was released in March, the Mac Pro update has been pending.
The Mac Studio’s launch offered both M3 and M4 variants, surprising many as it was the first time Apple introduced a new product with two different chip generations. The M4 Max was presented as less powerful than the M3 Ultra, leading some to speculate that Apple might not produce an M4 Ultra chip. However, current findings indicate that the chip’s development is taking longer than expected.
The inclusion of an M4 Ultra chip in the Mac Pro would significantly differentiate it from the Mac Studio, addressing the issue of minimal distinction between the two product lines. It is speculated that an M4 Ultra Mac Studio could be released once the chip debuts in the Mac Pro.
