Add Custom Text Shortcuts on Android Devices

Android users can now enhance their typing efficiency by creating custom text shortcuts, allowing them to type a short combination of letters that automatically expands into a full phrase or sentence.

To create new text shortcuts on an Android device, users can follow two different methods depending on their device type. For Android Oreo devices, the process involves accessing the Settings app and navigating to the Language & input section.

The first step is to open the Settings app, which is represented by a blue-grey cog icon in the App Drawer. Alternatively, users can swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the cog icon. Once in the Settings app, users need to scroll to the third group of options and tap Language & input. On some phones, it may be necessary to tap System to access the Language & input menu.

After selecting Language & input, users should choose Personal dictionary, which is the third option in the section. Then, they need to select the + icon located in the top right corner of the screen. The next step involves typing a word or phrase in the line at the top, such as “I love you.” Users then need to tap the line labeled “Optional shortcut” and type the desired shortcut, for example, “ily” for “I love you.”

For Samsung Galaxy devices, the process is slightly different. Users start by opening the Settings app, represented by a cog icon in the App Drawer, or by swiping down from the top of the screen and tapping the cog icon. They then need to scroll down and tap General management, which is located near the bottom of the Settings menu next to an icon resembling slider bars.

After tapping General management, users should select Language and input, the first option at the top of the menu. The next step involves tapping On-screen keyboard under the “Keyboards” header, followed by tapping Samsung Keyboard, which is the default keyboard for Samsung Galaxy devices. Users should then tap Smart typing, the second option in the Samsung Keyboard menu, and subsequently tap Text shortcuts, the third option.

If the Text shortcuts option is grayed out, users need to tap the toggle switch next to “Predictive text” to turn it on. Once Text shortcuts is accessible, users can tap Add in the upper-right corner of the menu, which displays a pop-up to add a shortcut. They then type a shortcut in the line labeled “Shortcut” and a phrase in the line labeled “Expanded phrase.” Finally, users tap Add in the lower-right corner of the Add shortcut pop-up.

It is recommended to choose shortcuts that are easy to remember but unlikely to be typed accidentally as part of a regular word. Creating custom text shortcuts significantly enhances typing efficiency on Android devices by allowing users to instantly insert frequently used text with a short, memorable combination of letters.

This feature is particularly useful for common responses, email addresses, or complex technical terms, saving valuable time and reducing the effort required for daily communication. It streamlines the typing experience, making Android devices even more productive and user-friendly.
