OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced upcoming launches of new models, products, and features “over the next couple of months,” while warning of potential “capacity crunches” and service disruptions for ChatGPT users.

This announcement comes as numerous news outlets had anticipated an August release for GPT-5, with many predicting it would arrive at the month’s start. However, the calendar turning to August brought only Altman’s statement on X.com (formerly Twitter), signaling a potential delay for OpenAI’s eagerly awaited model.

In his post, Altman specifically cautioned users about potential service interruptions: “Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. Although it may be slightly choppy, we think you’ll really love what we’ve created for you!” This warning points to a period of instability for ChatGPT users as OpenAI prepares for its new offerings.

Altman’s statement on X.com read, “we have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months–new models, products, features, and more. please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. although it may be slightly choppy, we think you’ll really love what we’ve created for you!”

Coinciding with Altman’s warning, a ChatGPT user on Reddit reported an unannounced daily cap of 30 image uploads. The user, identified as Rhizopus_Nigrians, stated, “This cripples the workflow for serious users. And I am one. I’ve paid for Plus since the beginning. I love it. I’ve promoted this tool to friends, peers, even students.” While other Reddit users speculated this might be a temporary bug, the incident aligns with Altman’s forewarning of “capacity crunches” or “hiccups.”

GPT-5 is expected to introduce significant advancements, including the ability to automatically route user requests to the most appropriate model version or research method, eliminating the need for users to select from confusingly named models. Reports also suggest key improvements in accuracy, speed, and resource efficiency.

A key question surrounds whether the new model will be exclusive to Plus subscribers or if free ChatGPT users will also gain access. The anticipated high demand for GPT-5, particularly if it includes enhancements to the image generator, is likely a factor behind Altman’s proactive warnings about potential service disruptions.

The tech community has been abuzz with rumors surrounding GPT-5 as its expected release date approached. Meanwhile, other major tech players are making moves in the AI space, with Apple CEO Tim Cook indicating his company’s readiness to catch up in the AI market. Microsoft has also been noted for its aggressive integration of Copilot AI into Bing search, a move that has drawn criticism for being intrusive.
