Adobe has announced a suite of new AI-powered features for Photoshop, including a groundbreaking tool that can unblur any photo, as the software giant continues to double down on artificial intelligence capabilities in its creative products.
The most notable addition is the Generative Upscale tool, which uses Adobe’s proprietary Firefly AI models to remove blur and noise from images with minimal effort. Available in beta starting Tuesday, this feature addresses one of the most requested updates from the Photoshop community, according to the company. The tool enhances images up to 8 megapixels and delivers “sharper, more detailed results” while polishing the entire photo in one operation.
“Adobe Generative AI products like ChatGPT and Gemini made image creation and photo editing effortless. Suddenly, anyone could ‘Photoshop’ pictures without actually having to learn any Photoshop skills,” the announcement noted, highlighting how the company has responded to the rise of generative AI by developing its own models rather than being intimidated by the competition.
The Generative Upscale tool positions Adobe to compete with similar functionality already available in Google Photos through its Photo Unblur feature. However, Adobe’s implementation targets both professional photographers and casual users across multiple platforms, including desktop, web, and iPhone applications.
Alongside the unblurring capability, Adobe introduced Harmonize, a tool first demonstrated as Project Perfect Blend at Adobe Max last October. Harmonize allows users to seamlessly integrate objects into existing photos by automatically adjusting color, lighting, shadows, and visual tone to make the added elements appear as if they naturally belong in the scene.
The company has also enhanced its Remove tool by incorporating the latest Adobe Firefly Image model. This upgrade provides greater precision and quality when eliminating unwanted elements from images, generating more realistic content to replace removed objects and blending them more naturally with the background.
Users working with Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools will now have access to a new Gen AI Model Picker, allowing them to choose between Firefly Image 1 and Firefly Image 3 depending on their specific needs and preferences.
Rounding out the updates is a new Projects feature designed for the Photoshop desktop beta experience. This organizational tool creates a shared, centralized space for each project, helping users manage their creative work more efficiently by keeping all related files and assets in a single location. The Projects feature aims to improve productivity and facilitate collaboration on ongoing creative tasks.
The announcement comes just weeks after Adobe launched a Photoshop app for Android, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding its creative tools across platforms. These new features represent Adobe’s continued investment in AI technology as it seeks to maintain its leadership position in the creative software market against emerging competitors.
All the new AI-powered tools will be available starting Tuesday to Photoshop users through the beta program on desktop and web platforms, as well as through the iPhone Photoshop app. Adobe’s strategic focus on developing its own AI models, particularly the Firefly family, appears to be paying off as it delivers increasingly sophisticated capabilities to its user base of millions of creative professionals and enthusiasts.
