Spotify and Netflix Launch Interactive Golf Game Together

Spotify has partnered with Netflix to launch a mini-golf game, “Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament,” within its app, coinciding with the July 25 release of Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore 2” on Netflix.

This collaboration marks a significant new direction for Spotify, as it’s the first time the music streaming service has teamed up with another company to integrate a gaming experience directly into its platform. The game, developed in partnership with MiK Studio, allows users to perfect their golf swing by tapping their device to complete three holes.

It offers a unique audio-visual experience, featuring audio clips from the movie after each round and a personalized playlist of “happy” tracks. Players can also discover “Easter eggs” like Happy’s boots, his hockey stick, and an alligator. Upon completion, users can watch the official “Happy Gilmore 2” trailer and share their personalized playlist and final score on social media.

This promotional campaign is notable for Spotify, which has largely overlooked gaming, and could serve as a test for future in-app gaming ventures. The partnership leverages the appeal of a “beloved cult classic” to boost engagement. As Spotify News tweeted, “It’s time to get in your bag. Your virtual golf bag, that is 🏌️ Because @netflix has just created the first-ever in-app golf experience on Spotify to celebrate the release of “Happy Gilmore 2.”

While this is Spotify‘s first external gaming collaboration, the platform previously launched a hidden internal game in 2023 called ‘Eat This Playlist,’ a variation of the classic Snake arcade game, as an Easter Egg.
