Apple’s iPhone Lineup to Undergo Major Changes by 2027

Apple’s iPhone lineup is expected to undergo significant changes over the next three years, with new models, design innovations, and shifts in release schedules from late 2025 through 2027.

The year 2025 is anticipated to bring a substantial overhaul to the iPhone series. The fall of 2025 is expected to feature the release of four distinct iPhone models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Air is set to replace the existing Plus model within Apple’s product range and is designed to be the thinnest iPhone produced to date, with a reported thickness of 5.6mm. This design choice prioritizes form over functional aspects, resulting in specific limitations for the iPhone 17 Air, particularly in battery life and camera performance, where it will likely underperform compared to the other iPhone 17 models. Conversely, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is anticipated to feature an increased thickness, designed to accommodate a larger battery capacity.

In 2026, Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable device. Early in 2026, the iPhone 17e is scheduled for release, offering many of the features present in the iPhone 17 but in a more budget-friendly package, which will involve certain compromises. The fall 2026 lineup is projected to consist of four models: the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone 18 Fold. Notably, a base iPhone 18 model will not be included in this fall release due to the integration of the first foldable iPhone into the lineup. The rumored specifications for the iPhone Fold include a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display, featuring a crease-free, book-style folding design. While the iPhone 18 Air is projected to maintain a similar appearance and feel to its predecessor, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max may undergo a key design modification, potentially eliminating the Dynamic Island cutout in favor of a single hole-punch positioned in a corner of the display.

The year 2027 is poised to witness the introduction of the highest number of new iPhone models in a single year, totaling six. In the spring of 2027, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, two lower-cost variants that will be released several months after the higher-priced iPhone 18 Air, Pro, and Fold models. Following these spring releases, four additional iPhones are anticipated in the fall: the iPhone 19 Air, iPhone 19 Pro, iPhone 19 Pro Max, and the iPhone 19 Fold. Key enhancements for the flagship iPhone 19 series include a larger screen for the iPhone 19 Air, and the iPhone 19 Pro and Pro Max are potentially slated to feature all-screen, cutout-free designs, signifying a major aesthetic and functional advancement. Should Apple successfully deliver the first truly all-screen iPhone in 2027, this release will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, occurring a decade after the introduction of the iPhone X, which similarly marked a radical design shift.
