Anthropic has released a new suite of AI models, “Claude Gov,” designed specifically for U.S. national security customers, developed based on feedback from government agencies to address operational requirements.
The Claude Gov models are tailored for government operations, including strategic planning, operational support, and intelligence analysis. According to Anthropic, these models are already deployed by agencies operating at the highest levels of U.S. national security, with access restricted to individuals working within classified environments.
“[These] models are already deployed by agencies at the highest level of U.S. national security, and access to these models is limited to those who operate in such classified environments,” Anthropic stated. The company also confirmed that the Claude Gov models underwent the same rigorous safety testing as its other Claude model variants.
Anthropic highlights several key enhancements in the Claude Gov models compared to its consumer and enterprise offerings. These include improved handling of classified material, reduced refusal rates when engaging with classified information, and a greater understanding of documents within intelligence and defense contexts. The models also feature enhanced proficiency in languages and dialects critical to national security and improved capabilities in understanding and interpreting complex cybersecurity data for intelligence analysis.
Other major AI labs are also pursuing defense contracts. OpenAI is reportedly seeking closer ties with the U.S. Defense Department, while Meta recently made its Llama models available to defense partners. Google is refining a version of its Gemini AI for use in classified environments, and Cohere is collaborating with Palantir to deploy its AI models.
