X has launched an experiment to identify and potentially highlight posts liked by individuals with opposing viewpoints, utilizing its crowdsourced Community Notes feature to develop an open-source algorithm.
The experiment, which began on Thursday, involves a select group of Community Notes contributors who will be prompted to rate and provide feedback on specific posts based on their initial Like activity. These contributors will share their thoughts on the posts, indicating what they like or dislike about them through feedback options such as “I learned something interesting” or “I don’t agree with it.”
The feedback gathered from contributors will be used to develop the open-source algorithm, with the goal of identifying posts that resonate with users holding diverse perspectives. According to X, this initiative aims to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge different perspectives, as Community Notes has shown that people can agree even on contentious topics.
“People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics,” X said in a post. “This experimental new feature seeks to uncover ideas, insights, and opinions that bridge perspectives.”
Community Notes was introduced on X in 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform and has since been adopted by Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
