Volvo Unveils Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt Technology

Volvo is set to enhance its safety reputation with the introduction of a new “multi-adaptive safety belt” that utilizes real-time data from vehicle sensors to provide improved protection for occupants during a crash.

The new multi-adaptive safety belt leverages advanced technology, expanding load-limiting profiles from three to 11, allowing the belt to tailor its performance based on specific crash situations and individual occupants. Modern safety belts currently use load limiters with three profiles to control the force applied to the body during impact.

Sensor data can be used to customize the seatbelt’s response based on factors such as a person’s height, weight, body shape, and seating position. For instance, a larger occupant might receive a higher belt load setting to mitigate head injury risk, while a smaller person in a less severe crash could have a lower setting to reduce the likelihood of rib fractures.

During a crash, Volvo vehicles’ safety systems will share sensor data, including direction, speed, and passenger posture, with the multi-adaptive seatbelts to determine the optimal force to apply. Furthermore, Volvo states that these seatbelts can be improved over time through over-the-air software updates.

This development aligns with Volvo’s prior initiatives aimed at highlighting its commitment to safety. The company notably limits the top speed of all its vehicles to 112 mph, a figure significantly lower than the 155 mph limit previously agreed upon by Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW to reduce Autobahn fatalities.

The new multi-adaptive safety belts are scheduled to debut in the upcoming Volvo EX60, a mid-sized electric SUV expected to launch next year.
