Google Drive Unveils AI-Powered ‘Catch Me Up’ Feature

Google has introduced a new feature in Google Drive called ‘Catch me up’, announced on June 3, which leverages Gemini, Google’s generative AI, to provide users with summaries of changes made to their files since they were last accessed.

The ‘Catch me up’ feature is designed to quickly bring users up to speed on collaborations and file updates without requiring them to manually review version history or navigate through comments. Users can activate this feature in a couple of ways. By visiting the Google Drive home page, they can tap the star icon located next to a specific file’s name to see a summary of changes for that individual file. Alternatively, a dedicated ‘Catch me up’ button at the top of the home page allows users to view a consolidated summary of recent changes across all their relevant files.

According to information from Google Workspace Updates, the feature enables Gemini to identify Drive files that have been modified since a user’s last view and offer an overview of these changes. The ‘Catch me up’ feature currently supports file edits within Google Docs. Furthermore, it provides summaries for comments made in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.

Google notes that the summaries generated by ‘Catch me up’ are not intended to be exhaustive representations of every single change. Instead, the focus is on highlighting “helpful and important” modifications. This selective approach aims to provide users with the most relevant information efficiently, particularly beneficial in collaborative environments where documents, spreadsheets, and presentations are frequently updated by multiple contributors.

While existing Google productivity tools offer methods like version history pages and in-file comment viewing for tracking changes, ‘Catch me up’ presents a streamlined alternative for getting a quick overview of edits and feedback. The rollout for ‘Catch me up’ began on June 3, but the feature is currently restricted to the English language. Google has also stated that users may need to wait up to 15 days to see the feature appear in their Google Drive interface.
