OpenAI Rolls Out Enhanced Memory for Free ChatGPT Users

OpenAI has started rolling out an enhanced memory feature for free ChatGPT users, enabling the AI to reference past conversations for more relevant responses, as confirmed in an OpenAI support document.

The update, which began phasing in on June 3, 2025, for logged-in free users, allows ChatGPT to save conversational context for a longer duration. This means that if a user provides a specific instruction or preference, ChatGPT is more likely to remember and apply it in subsequent interactions. OpenAI stated that in addition to previously saved memories, ChatGPT will now leverage recent conversations to provide answers that are more tailored and relevant to the user.

However, the version of the memory feature available to free users has limitations. Free accounts receive a lighter version, designed for short-term continuity across conversations. In contrast, paid subscribers, including those on ChatGPT Plus at $20/month and ChatGPT Pro at $200/month, have access to a more powerful memory function that can reference much older messages.

Users who prefer not to have ChatGPT retain information from their past conversations have options. The memory feature, labeled as “Reference chat history,” can be toggled off within the ChatGPT Settings. Additionally, users can manually remove specific stored memories they deem unnecessary or sensitive. For conversations that should leave no trace, ChatGPT offers a “Temporary Chat” feature, which operates similarly to incognito mode in web browsers.
