Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen has surpassed $800 million in crowdfunding, marking a significant milestone in the game’s prolonged development phase, which began with a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign in 2012.

Star Citizen was first announced in 2012 with a Kickstarter campaign that broke records, raising $39,680,576 and generating considerable excitement around the game, which promised a sprawling multiplayer universe featuring space combat and interstellar trading. The initial campaign’s success set the stage for a highly anticipated game.

Nearly 13 years later, the project remains in its early access alpha stage, a considerable delay from its initial target release in 2014. Despite the lack of a concrete release date, the game’s crowdfunding continues to grow, with over 5.5 million players contributing to the game’s development. The $800 million mark was reached as of April 9, following the previous milestone of $700 million in May 2024.

The significant funding has made Star Citizen one of the most expensive video games ever developed, all without the backing of a publisher. However, the prolonged development and absence of a release date have raised concerns among some players. The paid alpha version has been available for years, but a 1.0 version that fulfills the original vision remains elusive.

The single-player spin-off, Squadron 42, features notable actors such as Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, and Gary Oldman. At CitizenCon 2024, the developers revealed their aim for a 2026 release for Squadron 42, with the first gameplay footage being showcased at the event. Although Squadron 42 was declared “feature complete” in 2023, it has experienced multiple delays, casting doubt on its planned release next year.

The game’s continuous delays and substantial funding have led to criticism and refund requests from some players, as reported by Polygon. Nonetheless, with the $1 billion mark looming, it appears that Star Citizen’s development is far from over.
